After years without any awards to recognize gospel artists, this year will be different. On September 8, the Spirit Filled Networks will be launching the first of Botswana’s Gospel awards.
“It is time we started honoring Batswana gospel music artists who made great impact in the local gospel music industry and those who have positively impacted the community through other music related projects hence these awards,” said the director of Spirit Filled Networks, Franklyn Moyo.
The music awards will have ten categories; Best male, Best female, Best choral, Best group, Best upcoming, Best new comer, Song of the year, Most influential artists who has been involved in community building projects, Best producer and lastly Best songwriter/composer.
Moyo explained that, “any Botswana based gospel music artists (groups, choirs and solo artists) that have released an album and are registered with the Copyright office and have holograms can be a part of the awards.”
He added that the groups or artists who they encourage to be part of the awards are those who have been recording since 2007 and this he said was so that they remain somewhat current. “Already we have about 31 artists who have signed up to become part of the awards and on June 26, we will no longer let artists to register. Instead, now we will open the process to the general public to vote for three artists of their choice from each category and the overall winner will be decided on the day of the awards.”
In the category of Best upcoming artist, shows will be held in three towns - Gaborone, Francistown and another town which they have not yet decided on - so as to identify upcoming talent. Also, the overall winner will be revealed during the award ceremony.
